An ornate, Victorian-era brooch, modeled in 14k gold, whose subject is a lyre, surrounded by grapevines. This lyre sits atop a horizontal staff, at the center of our composition, the channels of its body inlaid with heavily-figured, gold-bearing quartz. Astride it, bunches of grapes, grape leaves, tendrils and vines wrap themselves around the staff and behind the lyre in a naturalistic manner. The grape leaves and vines, here, are deeply textured, while the grapes and tendrils are finished with a high polish. The staff, lyre, vines and tendrils are rose gold, while the leaves are vibrant yellow.
This is a beautiful, unusual brooch, with lots of symbolic, sentimental appeal— an attribute of Apollo, the god of prophecy and music, the lyre, to the Victorians, symbolized wisdom and moderation, while grapes and grapevines were symbolic of birth, rebirth, and abundance. This brooch is marked 14, for 14k purity. Its closure is a broad, flat c-clasp.
