This Gemini pendant, and the other designs in this 1960s -1970s zodiac series, was made to recall an ancient roman coin, with the slightly craggy textural qualities you would expect to find in something ancient, and with nicks at the edges that are integral to the design. In ancient times merchants might nick the edge of a gold coin to discover if it was good, and solid, or a clever fugazi. This pendant is inscribed "Van Cleef & Arpels," and "Made in France;" it is marked for 18k gold and for the master Georges L'Enfant on the large bail. These pendants are rarely offered and were never reproduced after their original run in the 1960s - 70s.
