Victorian "Toujours Pret" Intaglio Signet Ring
Hardstone with Tiger Passant in 15k Gold
* * SOLD * *
An outstanding, Victorian-era signet ring, modeled in 15k rosy yellow gold, whose hardstone intaglio seal is masterfully carved with the image of a svelt, elegant tiger, in passant attitude. Our tiger wears a collar; his tail curls, and his tongue lolls. Above the handsome feline, a scrolling banner holds the French motto toujours pret— "always ready." The rectangular, hardstone gem (sometimes called sardonyx) has a red base and a white top; its edges are beveled, and it is held in a smooth, low bezel. The ring's shell-form shoulders feature deeply-carved rays— these four rays are dimensional with deep recesses and scalloped edges. The ring's weighty, half-round shank is carved with grooves that extend from the shoulder detail. This ring is beautifully carved and completely unique! It would make a wonderful signature piece for someone who is up for anything, or for someone who is always on guard!
