Diana of the Hunt Sard Intaglio Pendant
Victorian, in 18k Gold
* * SOLD * *
A wonderful Victorian-era pendant, modeled in 14k rosy yellow gold, whose oval slab of red-brown sard features an intaglio carving of Diana the huntress, lounging with her stag and hound! This beautiful scene is carved onto the gem's rectangular “table," which stands slightly proud of the larger oval shape, overlapping it slightly at the corners. The image closely approximates the Diana of Anet fountain that now lives in the Louvre. The intaglio carving is masterful and finely detailed— the breasts of the goddess and the breast of the stag are the lowest relief points in this carving, though they appear raised. This sard slab is mounted in a two-peaked frame, where is spins freely. There is an intaglio-carved signature on reverse. We especially love the ideas that come along with Diana— fertility, kinship with animals, and feminine strength!
