Sloan & Co. Enamel Devil in a Cocktail Shaker Charm
in 14k Gold
* * SOLD * *
A dainty, vintage, articulated charm, made in 14k yellow gold by the well-known New York jewelers Sloan & Co. This little charm is made to resemble a cocktail shaker, with a hinged lid. Open the lid, and a tiny satan rises up from within! This little devil wears a devious expression, and a pointed, upturned mustache, along with his diabolical "horns." His horns and clothes are decorated with bright red enamel, while his face is finished with a high-color gold bloom. We love this finely-made old charm— you can read it as a warning about the evils of alcohol, or as a cheeky way to show you like to party! Marked 14k for purity, and with the Sloan & Co. lyre.
This charm is smaller, older, and more finely detailed than the devil in shaker charm one usually finds. Notice the lack of a pour spout, and the tiny intricate face of this devil. He looks like a man (rather than an imp)— a nod to the early century notion of the devil as a suave beguiling dandy! The mechanisms that open the shaker's lid, and bring the devil to its opening, are impressively tight and smooth.
