A Victorian-era micro mosaic brooch, modeled in 18k yellow gold, whose subject is Saint Peter’s Basilica, recreated here in the tiniest, most precise tesserae. This miraculous little Roman scene is held in an elegant Etruscan revival mount (closed-back), which also houses starry, curved tesserae panels that border the Vatican scene. This very special brooch was made by the famous micro mosaic artist Cesare Roccheggiani, who maintained his own workshop, and was also employed by the Vatican workshops from 1856 - 1864. This artist is known for his monumental works, as well as for smaller commissioned pieces and grand tour souvenirs. This brooch is in outstanding condition and it comes in its original fitted box. We love the perfectly round shape of this brooch, and the smart, tasteful gold-work. Closure is a pigtail c-clasp. The pin stem is formed over a clever, shapely tightening-bridge.
