A large, Georgian-era brooch, modeled in 14k yellow gold, whose subject (a dove in flight, bearing a letter) is depicted among grapevines, grape leaves, and tendrils. Our feathered friend's message is a sentimental one— "forget me not." This brooch is primarily repoussé, which means its many, highly-dimensional elements were formed by hammering a gold sheet into relief from the reverse side.

The brooch is also extensively hand-engraved the fine stippled and hashed textures were all applied by hand. Closure is a pigtail c-clasp, with a long-stem pin.

This is a rare old jewel and we love the many symbolic elements at work here: the dove, the grapevine, and the way the grapevine crosses over itself, like a knot, in a subtle gesture of joining. Grapes can be symbolic of both fertility and rebirth. We believe this brooch was originally intended as a memorial jewel, but it is also possible to see it as a gift for a sweetheart.
